Historically cafes and coffee houses acted as places to meet, share art, debate, socialise... and drink coffee. Today these spaces can still tell you a lot about your locale, both at home and away. Want to learn something about a place? Go and buy a coffee in a local place (not a global chain). If the flavour or taste of the drink before you doesn't alert you to something, you'll at least be full of beans enough to notice something of the way of life or the environment that's unfolding around you. Cafes provide lively scenes* as well as a space in which to pause, reflect and consider the world around you.
*A great place to sketch people/ form if you can’t make it to a life class!
A short stop-motion animation test playing with this cafe sketch, drawn in a greasy spoon in London.
